BASEBALLÂ
It was a logjam at the top of the CSL baseball divisions this season. Maine West, Deerfield and Highland Park each needed a victory in their last conference game of the season in order to seal at least a share of the crown with identical 8-6 records.
For the Warriors, Zack Steingard gave up no earned runs in 6 innings on the mound in an 8-5 win over Niles North.Â
Highland Park defeated Vernon Hills 3-0 in 9 innings, as Luke Weber pitched 8 and 2/3 innings and struck out 14 in the victory. Dylan Lew had a big 2-RBI double in the 9th to help put away Vernon Hills. It was the second consecutive shutout for Giants pitching vs. the Cougars after Michael Pasquesi tossed a complete game shutout earlier in the week.
Deerfield defeated Maine East 12-7 to clinch its share. Eight Warriors had at least 1 RBI, while Easton Newman was 3 for 4 with a run, an RBI, and a walk. Tyler Bernstein was 2 for 5 with a triple and a run scored.
