GIRLS WRESTLING
Evanston hosted a Mega Duel Saturday in its Willy May Fieldhouse. The Wildkits went 0-3, with Ariana Flores and Ashland Henson leading the way with victories during the day. I’ll have more early this week on the Wildkits.
BOYS WRESTLING
Deerfield enshrined Jeremy Fahler and Josh Katz in its Hall of Fame.
Drew Duffy (285) won another tournament title, this time at his team’s home Rus Erb Invite as Glenbrook South was 5th as a team. Deerfield’s Aiden Cohen (170) and Jordan Rasof (132) each claimed individual titles as Deerfield took 6th.
Evanston, which finished 10th at Run Erb, took a 60-15 loss to GBS.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Vernon Hills’ Ava Barszcz had a big week, committing to Aurora University for hoops and scoring 24 points with 6 3-pointers in a 73-29 victory over Maine East.
GBS’s Sidney Rogers committed to Washington University (St. Louis, MO).
Maine South won its 6th consecutive game beating Wheaton Warrenville South 50-35 as Megan Fahy scored 23 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. The Hawks picked top victory #900 in program history when they defeated Glenbrook North on Friday.
Maine West defeated Niles North 62-39 after a loss to Willowbrook earlier in the week. The Warriors outscored the Vikings 22-9 in the fourth.
Per Bobby Narang’s article in the Lake County News-Sun, Maddie Chabot of Highland Park was averaging 16.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game for the Giants as of Tuesday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
In the crosstown rivalry, Niles North won the battle for Skokie thanks in large part to Vikings sophomore Yaris Irby and his 38 points in a 77-64 win over the Niles West Wolves. Irby also scored 32 vs. Taft. Davee Flowers scored 26 in the loss.
The Vikings also defeated Maine West 74-66.
New Trier won the Saguaro Holiday Invite in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Jake Fiegen was MVP of the tourney, while Logan Feller and Evan Kanellos each made all-tourney.
Glenbrook North’s Ryan Cohen committed to Washington University (St. Louis, Missouri).
Vernon Hills scored a strong win with the 66-54 dub vs. Maine East.
BOYS SWIM & DIVE
Vernon Hills was the top-performing CSL team at the Lake County Invite in 3rd place, with Highland Park taking 4th and Deerfield coming home with 6th.
Kevin Obochi took 2 golds for Highland Park at The Lake County Swim Invite, winning the 50 free and 100 fly.
Deerfield’s Matthew Borovik won the 100 breaststroke.
Per The Daily Herald’s Bill Esbrook:
“Host Vernon Hills was led by Edward Zhao, who was second in the 100 back (53.08) and led his 200 medley relay team to a runner-up placement.”
Maine East took 3rd at the Leyden Invite.
GIRLS GYMNASTICS
GBN defeated New Trier in a duel 142.05 to 139.65 with Betsy Alcorn taking the all-around (37.200).
Evanston beat Niles West and Vernon Hills defeated Highland Park during the week. Evanston’s Tait Hansen won the all-around with a 31.30. Niles West’s Natalie Garcia scored. 28.85 in the all-around. Annika Chudy won the all-around for Vernon Hills against HP with a 37.75.
Maine South barley clipped GBS 129.25 to 129.00. Anastasia Gritsonis was tops in the all-around with a 33.95.

Maine South assistant football coach Charlie Bliss will be inducted into the IHFCA Hall of Fame.
New Trier graduate Michael Vinson earned AFCA First Team All-American distinction as a long snapper for Notre Dame.
Maine South graduate and Northwestern Football All-American Peter Skoronski declared for the NFL Draft.
Vernon Hills’ Carly Sides verbally committed to Northern Michigan for soccer.
Vernon Hills’ Anna Todd signed to run cross at UMass.
Maine East graduate Evelyn Bandera committed to Oakton for girls soccer.
Members of the Deerfield, Highland park and Vernon Hills football teams were honored by the Lake County News-Sun as all-area members.
GRAD CATCHUPS
Evanston graduate Blake Peters, a sophomore at Princeton, has played in at least 10 minutes in all of the Tigers’ games this season and is averaging 5.7 ppg. He’s 19 of 46 from 3, (41.3%).
Vernon Hills graduate Dan Lester, an accomplished Defensive Tackle for North Central College, won a national championship with the Cardinals on Saturday. Cougars alums Jake Peter and Alex Gil also are on the Division III national championship team.
The other CSL player on that NCC team was Peter Braithwaite (Evanston).
Highland Park graduate and current Richmond Spiders women’s basketball player Addie Budnik was the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, awarded on Dec. 12.
