FOOTBALL
Maine South extended its postseason stay with a 42-0 thumping of an overwhelmed and previously-unbeaten South Elgin squad.
Ryan Leyden threw for all 4 of his touchdown passes in the first half and totaled 223 passing yards overall. Evan Agosto hauled in 2 of them, while Michael Dell and Maurice Densmore had the other 2. Dellumo and Jack DeFilippis both recorded rushing touchdowns.
The Hawks have outscored their two opponents, Bolingbrook and South Elgin, 66-0 to begin the playoffs.
Glenbrook South was no match for Glenbard West at Duchon Field in Glen Elyn on. Saturday, falling by a 42-0 score. I was on-site for the coverage, namely for my freelancing gig with Journal & Topics Media, but I also took photos for CSLV.
CROSS COUNTRY
The state cross country meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria was a sloppy affair of rain and mud and all-around mess.
Coming out of that mess strong were just a few CSL athletes.
At the top of the crowd was Glenbrook North’s Juliet Frum, who was second in Class 3A in 17:16.66, and also earns CSL Varsity Player Of The Week honors.
Maine South finished 19th as a team.
In 2A girls, Vernon Hills’ Anna Todd took 51st to lead CSL competitors from the Cougars and Deerfield. Deerfield was 25th as a team and Vernon Hills was 22nd.
For the boys, New Trier was 10th in 3A led by Ben Crane’s 30th-place finish.
Maine South took 9th, led by Joey Karlesky in 38th.
For 2A boys, Deerfield earned 11th as a squad with Dane Brown (41st) the top finisher.
Vernon Hills was 24th.
SWIM & DIVE
Deerfield was runner-up at the Stevenson Sectional, advancing 2 relays and individuals in a number of events.
Isabella Wilhelm won the 100 Freestyle and was on the winning 200-Yard medley relay (winning time 1:43.20) that featured Carmel Ulizio, Erika Ilk and Annika Parkhe.
Parkhe also won the 100 butterfly (54.43).
Highland Park was 5th at the event. The Giants advanced two relays (200 freestyle and 400 freestyle) and advance competitors in 4 individual races.
Vernon Hills took 7th. And was led by Isabella Ramos’ winning time of 2:07.01 in the 200 individual medley.

At the Glenbrook South sectional, New Trier was the dominant victor overall, winning 3 relays and 8 individual events.
Glenbrook South’s Jacki Stadler dominated in diving, scoring a 525.05.
Niles West’s Celine Rayan competed in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle and will compete for the Wolves at state in those events.
Evanston took 4th, GBS was 5th, Maine South took 6th, Niles North was 7th, Niles West was 10th, and Maine East earned 11th.
Evanston’s Dennis Mahoney passed along some interesting notes about diver Susannah Bailey.
“The Evanston senior claimed the final at-large state qualifying spot in diving after discovering that no one at the Chatham-Glenwood Sectional meet bettered her 11-dive score of 384.0.”
Mahoney, as he does, wrote a great feature about the circumstances surrounding her qualifying.
Of note, Maine South freshman Sarah Juiris qualified in the 100 freestyle, joining Rayan as the lone freshman from the sectional to qualify for state.
VOLLEYBALL
Vernon Hills’ season came to an end in a 2-set home loss to Saint Viator. I was in attendance, primarily covering it for Journal & Topics Media, but also took photos and did a notebook for the newsletter about the Cougars.

True freshman Nevan Cremascoli, a true freshman who graduated from New Trier, started the game at quarterback for the Huskies, his first career start. He completed 13 of 33 passes for 158 yards, 2 TDs and an INT. He also ran for 15 yards.
DID YOU SEE?
Highland Park Class of 2024 pitcher Luke Weber verbally commited to Illinois. I conducted a Q&A with him about it.
New Trier Class of 2023 pitcher Charlie Hahn commited to the University of Chicago for baseball.
Maine South legend Dave Butz passed away at the age of 72. Dion Martorano has done a wonderful job of memorialising him.
