OF NOTE
Once outdoor track and field starts with the spring sports season, there will be weekly “BOYS/GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD” sections, but until then, I’ll just note some top performances in “Did you See?”
If you see an indoor track and field performance that is deserving of particular attention, you can still submit those athletes for Player of the Week nominations.
A reminder to those who wish to submit results, notes or story ideas, my email is a great place to submit CSL results. That’s Kalebcarter4256@gmail.com

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Deerfield jumped out to a hot start and held off a comeback attempt from Carmel to claim a Class 3A sectional title at home Wednesday.
The Kerstein sisters, Lexi and Nikki scored the first 10 points of the game, and combined for 32 points.
“We definitely wanted to pressure them because we know that we’re really good defensively in the full court,” Lexi Kerstein said. “A lot of people think they can just go by us, but we’re really good a keeping the girl in front of us. Definitely getting steals off that, in the fourth quarter as you saw, we got a ton of steals and that’s what we were planning.”
The Warriors locked down the Corsairs, who had scored just once in the first six minutes of the game.
Olivia Kerndt and the Warriors were big on the boards in the early-going, though Carmel senior and Michigan State commit Jordan Wood brought the Corsairs within 3 points in the third quarter, and Carmel trailed only 35-30 to end the third.
Lexi Kerstein said staying calm in such moments is crucial.
“You have to zone everything out and there were a ton of people here, but whatever happens in these four lines, you can only control what you can control.”
Corsairs junior guard Ashley Schlabowske, whose defense flustered the Warriors at times in the second half, pulled the Corsairs back within 3, but Kerndt hit a big bucket and Aubrey Galvan scored 8 fourth-quarter points.
Galvan’s defense (7 steals) and late-game play was critical in the Warriors win. Brenna Burns gave the Warriors an energy boost on the bench and on the floor in the third. Galvan also scored 13.
“We just needed to get back to be locked in,” Galvan said. I think as a team we all really came together. The team connection we have, we really pulled it off.”
