CSLV: Golf Champions Crowned; Women's Soccer Grad Catchups

A big shoutout as always to Dion Martorano for being absolutely tireless in his coverage and recognition of local athletics. Very few people in the country, and that is a fact, put as much time into high school athletics journalism as Dion does.Â
TEAM OF THE WEEK (Sept. 23-29)
Maine West girls flag football won its 13th consecutive game on Sept. 25 when it defeated Niles West 34-28. Though the Warriors have since lost once, their season record as of Oct. 2 was 16-2.Â
PLAYERÂ OF THE WEEK
Highland Park's Brooke Eliacin won the 50 free in 24.25 at the Girls Lake County Swim & Dive meet. Eliacin was also 2nd in the 100 breast stroke (1:05.54).Â
CSL STANDOUTSÂ
New Trier boys golf's Liam Kelly won the individual title with a 2-under 68 and led the Trevians to yet another team title, this time at Heritage Oaks (Northbrook). The Trevians won the team title with a score of 281.Â
Niles West's Arianna Jaramillo finished won the CSL North girls golf championships with a score of 83 at Wilmette Golf Course.
In a home win during the week against Deerfield, Vernon Hills defeated the Warriors 182-191, led by Erin Choi’s 42.Â
Glenbrook North's Martha Kuwahara won top honors at the CSL South girls golf championships with a 66 at Wilmette Golf Course to lead the Spartans to the team title with a score of 287. The Spatarans won the team title by 25 strokes over 2nd-place New Trier.
Jake Levitan of Vernon Hills boys golf was the CSL North boys golf individual champion after carding a 72 at Heritage Oaks in Northbrook.
Evanston boys soccer’s Joseph Sargent scored the winning goal in a 2-1 win over GBN.Â
Maine West football's Maksym Makota ran for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns and totaled 10 tackles in a win over Highland Park.Â
Vernon Hills football’s Giuseppe Urso (173), Langston Miller (160) and Colin McMurray (80) led the way for a Cougars squad that totaled 463 rushing yards vs. Maine East.
Deerfield's Erika Ilkiu took 2nd in the 200 IM at the Girls Lake County meet in a time of 2:14.62. She was also 3rd in the 100 breast stroke.Â
Vernon Hills' Sophia Kamarauli was the girls Lake County champ in the 100 backstroke in a time of 59.83. Kamarauli also earned 3rd in the 200 IM (2:16.45).Â
Highland Park boys cross country’s Dylan Dominguez was the winner of the CSL Quad meet at Niles West in 15:21.1. HP’s Henry Gamson was 2nd, and Niles West’s Jude Grant took 3rd.Â
Niles North’s Lindsey Klaus took 1st at the same CSL Quad at Niles West for the girls in 19:11.6. Bella Mohair was 2nd for the Vikings and Vernon Hills’ Jori Ellen was 3rd.Â
Deerfield boys cross country’s Andrew Calderon was 4th at Grant’s James Taylor Invite in 16:22.22.Â
Evanston girls swim & dive’s Vanya Gjakvic brought home 3rd in the 200IM (2:13.48) and was n the 3rd place 400 Free relay at the Wildkits’ home invite. She also took 4th in the 100 back.
Niles West girls volleyball’s Claire Stewart had an impressive 11-kill, 3-block, 3-dig evening in a Wolves win over Maine East.
Maine South girls tennis’ Ella Raseta had a good weekend, winning 2 no. 1 singles matches and a pair of No. 1 doubles match as well.Â
Some top No. 1 singles performers from Mt. Prospect tennis’ invite on Saturday included Kaitlyn Wu (GBN) Ava Katz (NT), Elizabeth Gelyzer (DF), Nadia Barbieri (HP).

GRAD CATCHUPS
Evanston graduate Jocelyn Leigh has 2 goals, an assist and 6 shots on goal thus far for Loyola University women’s soccer.
Highland Park graduate Greta Ohlwein netted 2 goals in a Sept. 15th victory for Southern Indiana women’s soccer. As of Sept. 22 she had started in 9 of 10 games for USI.
Danielle Boudahk, a Niles West graduate, had started in 7 games as a defender for North Park University women’s soccer. In her 4th season with the Vikings, she has started every game she has played. Fellow Niles West gra Maja Applequist has started in 8 games, has a goal and 2 assists as a midfielder with the team.
