BOYS BASKETBALL

New Trier, playing in its second consecutive state final four in Champaign, dropped a close 40-35 semifinal contest to eventual state champions Homewood-Flossmoor, before defeating Palatine 53-35 in the 3rd-place game.Â

BOYS GYMNASTICSÂ
Evanston claimed victory at the John Burkel Boys Gymnastics Invitational.
Evanston’s 133.305 score was tops, as GBS finished 5th with 125.440. The Wildkits were led by the all-around score of Mo Fischer with a 46.500, good for 4th. Jacob Potter took 8th in the all-around for the ‘Kits.Â
GBN’s Jacob Cooper won the floor (9.00) and the Spartans’ Eli Cooper took 7th in the all-around.
Glenbrook South’s David Kim brought home 10th in the all-around and Deerfield’s Chance Ferris and Nathan Penzenik went 11-12 in the all-around.Â
Niles West took 6th as a team.Â
GIRLS WATER POLOÂ
Maine West started its season in dominant fashion, defeating Warren 19-4, Taft 15-2 and Barrington 10-5. Nicole Kaner deposited 6 goals into the net vs. Warren and Lauren Capper added 4 more.Â
Vernon Hills’ Avin Kamai scored 10 goals and had 3 assists Saturday as the Cougars dropped one to Niles West (10-9) and defeated Elk Grove (13-2) and Hoffman Estates (17-6) at the Magnolia Tree tourney.Â
The Cougars also defeated Schaumburg 14-6, led by 6 goals from Julianne Oliva. Goalie Holly Faitsch produced 7 saves. Kamai added 3 goals.
Evanston began its season with a 2-1 start, defeating Hersey (7-6) and Fremd (5-3)and lost to Naperville North (10-8). Evey Harrell and Aver Cunningham notched 6 goals apiece over those games.Â
BOYS WATER POLO
New Trier started its season with wins over traditionally strong programs York (13-4) and Naperville North (10-7).Â
GRAD CATCHUPSÂ
Glenbrook South graduate Sydney Willits won an individual title in the long jump at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships. She leaped 22 1/2 feet (6.74 meters). Here is video of the winning jump.
Glenbrook South graduate Jack Cooley’s latest basketball venture has him playing for the Ryukyu Golden Knights of Japan’s B League, the top level of basketball in the country. As of Sunday, Cooley was averaging 14.9ppg, 2nd on the team behind former Northwestern University star Victor Law.
Evanston grad Jayla Turchin was an all-CCAC pick for Roosevelt College women’s basketball.
