Glenbrook North and Evanston boys basketball continue hot starts
The CSL Varsity Player of the Week is shared between Evanston senior bowler Clayton Krasinski and New Trier bowler Ford Denham. Check out what won them the award in the bowling section below.
OF NOTE
On a personal note, I will be further ingraining myself within the sphere of CSL athletics. I have recently accepted the position of throws coach for the Highland Park boys track and field team. I’m very excited to continue my work coaching with the Giants and am excited to use this platform to also promote CSL track and field athletics.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
It didn’t make last week’s newsletter, but Deerfield’s Lexi Kerstein was the fan vote Player of the Week, taking a whopping 74% of the vote (143 people voted). The new poll is up on the CSL Varsity twitter (@CSL_Varsity).
Glenbrook South made a statement with a 58-38 win over Evanston. They’re 8-0 after defeating Glenbrook North and the Wildkits last week.
Sidney Rogers is averaging a team-high 14.9 ppg and 3.5 assists per game. She’s shooting a blistering 51% on 3-pointers.
Niles West’s Mia Cejovic had a big game of 15 points in a 52-43 victory over Zion-Benton.
BOYS BASKETBALL
In an eye-opening result, Maine East took Niles North to overtime before falling 71-67. Yaris Irby led the Vikings with 26 points.
Evanston held off a late run from Glenbrook South to win at home, 61-59. It’s a result that could be a decider for the CSL South come a few months down the line.
Glenbrook North is now 6-0.
BOYS WRESTLING
Highland Park had 4 first-place finishers as the team took 2nd overall at the Hinsdale South tourney.
Nate Ferrari, Mark Martinez, Dmitry Derbedyenyev and Jacques Munkhjargal all claimed titles. The Giants also won three duals Wednesday.
Glenbrook South defeated Maine West, TF South and Lake Park to move to 6-0 in duals.
New Trier notched a big early-season dual win over Evanston, 48-25.
Niles North defeated Niles West 47-30.
GIRLS WRESTLING
Deerfield’s Bella Esparza became the first Deerfield Warriors girls wrestler to win a match.
SWIM & DIVE
Vernon Hills took 1st at the Maine East Blue Demon Invite.
CHEER
New Trier cheerleading took first at Carl Sandburg’s invite on Sunday.
GIRLS GYMNASTICS
Vernon Hills claimed the title in a 13-team field at the Glenbard West Hilltopper Invite. They also won a dual vs. GBN.
BOYS BOWLING
Evanston’s Clayton Krasinski bowled the third 300 game of the season in the conference, following New Trier’s Ford Denham.

Vernon Hills defeated Libertyville 3,443 to 3,194, led by Zack Shoemaker’s series of 640 (242 high game).
GIRLS BOWLING
Vernon Hills’ varsity took 9th at the Fremd Valhalla Invite, led by Ashlee Shoemaker in 6th place with a 1,151 series. The Cougars also defeated Evanston in a dual, led by Shoemaker’s high series (605) and high game (240).
Evanston opened the season with a 2,197 to 1,704 win over Glenbrook North, led by a 480 series from Nina Fischer.
Niles West defeated Niles North.

GRAD CATCHUPS
Deerfield graduate and current Purdue star Charlie Jones set the Boilermaker program record with 1,361 receiving yards this season. He also had 12 touchdowns and 110 receptions. He still has time to add on, with the Boilermakers penciled into the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against LSU. JOnes also accepted an invite to the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Evanston graduate Kayla Henning, a junior guard for American University in Washington D.C., is averaging 8.7 points per game, 3.0 assists per game.
She had a career-high 18 points in a Nov. 20 loss to Virginia.
