NEW FEATURE
Starting this week, I’m going to attempt to feature a team of the week.
This week’s team of the week is Vernon Hills girls track and field for its CSL North Indoor Invite team title. The Cougars won 7 events in all. Congrats to Vernon Hills on the big meet on Thursday.

Vernon Hills’ Becca Tran won the pole vault and was on the winning 4x160 and 4x400 relays. Freshman Julia Rausa won the 50 yard dash, high jump and was 2nd in the 200 dash.

For Maine South, Sofia Arcuri won the 1,600 and was on the winning 4x800.
Glenbrook South freshman Kaitlyn Burns bested the 3,200 meter field to win.
New Trier’s Maeve Kelly had a shot put heave of 11.56 meters, nearly 2 meters further than a thrower from any other CSL South program (teammate Carly McConnell was runner-up at 9.73m).
Glenbrook North’s Maria Polyakov took 4th in the 1,600 and 3rd in the 800.
Niles West’s Carissa Uy won the 50 meter dash and was 2nd in the long jump.

Highland Park’s Nate Wehner won the 1,600, 3,200 and was on the 2nd-place 4x400. Doug Anderson won the 200 meter dash and 400 meter dash.
Vernon Hills took 1st and 3rd in the shot put with Andrey Potarsky taking the title with a throw of 13.72 meters. Jaden Buford won a pole vault title for the Cougars.
Maine West sophomore Maksym Makota won the 50 meter dash with a time of 6.15 seconds.
Maine East’s Aaron Jallores won the triple jump and Deerfield’s Carlos Pacheco took the long jump.
Niles North’s Om Patel won the 55 high and 50 low hurdles.

CSL Varsity Newsletter Player of The Week Miles Granjean won 4 events, the 55 meter dash (6.65 sec), 200 meter dash (23.64), the 50 yard hurdles (7.42) and 55 meter hurdles (7.59) to earn the POTW distinction.
The Trevians had winners in the 4x800, 400, 1600, 3200 and pole vault.
Granjean has the top 55 high hurdles time in the state this year on athletic.net with a 7.49 in the Dan Phillips Relays on March 10.
Glenbrook North took the 4x400.
Glenbrook South’s Jordan Wyman bested the rest of the field by more than a full meter in the shot put with a mark of 15.21m.
GIRLS BADMINTON
Vernon Hills nabbed an 11-7 victory over Prospect and a 13-2 victory vs. Hersey. They also went 28-4 as a team with 5 1st-place finishers to win the Maine South Invite.
BOYS TENNIS
Deerfield swept past York 6-0, with No. 1 singles starter Spencer Kastin coming back from a first set to defeat to win in 3, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7. Ben Kogan won at No. 2 doubles, while the following Warrior’s 4 doubles pairs were also victorious.
BOYS WATER POLO
Vernon Hills defeated Maine West 17-11. And Highland Park 21-8.
Glenbrook North moved to 8-2 and nabbed a nice 11-8 victory during the week over conference foe Maine South.
Glenbrook South’s Nick Tiesi had 2 games with 9 saves apiece, Jacob German had an 8-goal game and Alex Burstein had an 8-goal performance.
Maine East defeated Maine West 10-8.
Maine South earned a 16-15 3OT win over Evanston.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Evanston defeated Glenbrook South 15-3 in the Wildkits’ home opener and then went 3-0 at the Libertyville tourney per illpolo.com.
Maine West went 3-1 at the Deerfield tourney to take 3rd.
GIRLS SOFTBALL
Niles West’s Maggie Burns, as mentioned above, had a sterling pitching performance, allowing three hits and striking out 6 in a shoutout win over Deerfield-Highland Park. Olivia Pukal and Burns had 2 hits apiece. Deerfield/Highland Park’s Rori Bowne had 2 hits.
Vernon Hills’ Amanda Teschky had a triple, an RBI and a stolen base n a 4-2 loss to Carmel Catholic
GIRLS LACROSSE
Evanston opened its season with a 14-1 win over Lane Tech.
GIRLS SOCCER
Maine South won the Elk Grove tourney, defeating Maine West 4-0, and timing Elk Grove (2-2) and Downers Grove North (0-0).
Evanston’s Jocelyn Leigh scored 4 goals in a season-opening 6-0 victory over Highland Park.
Niles West beat its 2 foes by an aggregate of 13-0 to start the season.
Deerfield’s Emily Fox is now 5th in program history in goals with 46 and 6th in total points with 116.
Glenbrook North dealt Loyola Academy a 4-1 drubbing to start the season.
Glenbrook South goalkeeper Lyndsey Mack had a shutout through 2 overtime periods and led her team to a PKs victory over Lincoln-Way West. It was her third shutout of the season. Mack pulled off a similar shutout feat in a GBS shootout win over Willowbrook.
RECORD ALERT
Maine South’s Madison Basquin once again broke her school record triple jump mark, bounding 11.39 meters to win the event at the CSL South Invite.
GRAD CATCH-UPS
Evanston graduate Blake Peters scored all 15 of his points on 3-pointers in the second half of Princeton’s Round of 32 win over Missouri, propelling the Ivy League program to the Sweet 16. The 15th-seeded Tigers become one of three 15 seeds to advance to the Sweet 16 in men’s Division 1 college basketball.
