Maine South's Drew Koenen Commits to Dartmouth
Class of 2023 pitcher has found the needed drive to make the leap to a higher level.
Maine South pitcher Drew Koenen has been steadily working toward a college decision that he was frankly just happy to have out of the way. Playing the game and the process of getting better was enough to keep him satisfied. The recruiting undertaking was a bit more burdensome.
Koenen’s excited to be preparing for his senior season, one that Maine South coach Brian Lorenz is justifiably excited for, especially when considering the two consecutive highly successive campaigns in which the Hawks went 25-10 (2022) and 22-13 (2021).
Last season, Koenen pitched 49 2/3 innings in 12 starts, struck out 50, allowed 37 hits, walked 30 with 12 HBP and posted a 2.11 E.R.A.
“Drew has dedicated himself to improving his physical presence on the mound. Daily habits of hitting the weight room, eating well, and conditioning has led to his ability to elevate his game. Drew has taken ownership to put the necessary work off the field to make strides to improve his performance on the mound. Over the past 4 years, I have witnessed firsthand the development and dedication that has been in everyday process. It has been really fun to watch. Not only has Drew excelled on the field, but he has taken ownership to be a role model within our program and helping younger players learn what it takes to work hard,” - Brian Lorenz
CSLV: What’s Your mindset after committing to play Division I baseball?
DK: “While it was an exciting process, I am glad it’s over. I had to miss school and I couldn’t fully focus on baseball because I was so preoccupied with the recruiting process. Now I am feeling great. I can focus on school and baseball without the worry of recruiting.”
CSLV: You took a few visits to other places then?
DK: “Yeah, I had some other visits as well as camps at other schools.”
CSLV: What stood out about Dartmouth and what vision do you have for what you’d like to accomplish there?
DK: “The Reason I chose Dartmouth was the world-class education, paired with the opportunity to play Division I baseball. At Dartmouth, I am hoping to contribute to a winning program that can compete with the best teams in the country. On top of that, I would like to graduate with a degree that will open many doors outside of baseball.”
