The CSL Varsity Newsletter: GBS Baseball's Ban Gives Davidson The Nod
Class of 2023 pitcher verbally commits to Davidson College. Also, coaching news in the conference.
Back in April, I watched Glenbrook South pitcher Jason Ban compete for the first time, where he was overpowering in a 3-0 Titans win against Conant.
I covered that game, and later saw him more than handle his own in a sectional final win over Loyola Academy. I covered both games for Journal & Topics Media. When I covered him on that cold, wet April Day in Glenview, he was touching 86 MPH on the radar gun from what I can recall of his teammates informing me that day.
Late in the year, he was reaching up to the high 80’s on his fastball. His offspeed pitches present a good mix, obviously good enough forbigger programs to come calling.
Saturday, the hard-throwing lefty verbally committed to the Davidson College baseball program. The Wildcats were a 43-13 (20-4 in Atlantic 10 play) tea and did not have any Illinois natives on the roster.
Coaching changes
Highland Park appointed Curt Hanson its new girls track and field coach. A Deerfield graduate who was on staff with the Giants as an assistant, Hanson replaces coach Sarah Palmberg.
In non-IHSA sports coaching news, New Trier’s club rowing team has a new coach, Sandy Culver.
Programming notes
With this, the third newsletter a week into the publication’s existence, I just wanted to offer up a quick thank you to everyone who has subscribed so far. The newsletter quickly picked up 50+ subscribers, some of which were paid subscribers, and I expect that to balloon as we get into the season. Thank you all!
I’ll leave you with this feel-good post from Maine South football.
