The CSL Varsity Newsletter: GBS Football Rolling, Ben Crane Leading NTXC, Schulman POTW
A big week for cross country coverage, a slate of MSL-CSL crossover matchups in football and more.
The fourth CSL Varsity Newsletter Player of the Week is Vernon Hills golfer Lexi Schulman. She is the second golfer to win the award. Her accomplishments are listed lower on in the newsletter.
Football
Glenbrook South was on top of its game in a 42-14 win over Fremd to move to 3-0. That sets up a big matchup for the Titans with Palatine. Per Hudl, the Titans ran for 266 yards and threw for 143. Chuck Gottfried caught 2 passes for 128 yards and 2 TDs.Â
Maine South mounted an impressive effort in a 38-7 win over MSL stronghold Barrington. The Hawks are 2-1*. Between Jack DeFilippis and Constantine Coines, the Hawks completed 16 passes for 236 yards, 4 TDs and an interception. Ryan Leyden, who began the year at QB was recently lost due to injury.Â

Evanston battled state-power Prospect down to the wire in a 17-14 loss. Evanston is now 1-2.Â
Highland Park couldn’t keep up with Buffalo Grove’s high-powered attack, falling 45-14. The Giants now sit at 2-1.Â
Niles West led Schaumburg on the road at halftime, but ultimately fell 17-7. The Wolves’ first loss left them at 2-1.Â
Palatine dispatched New Trier 34-14. The Trevians are winless at 0-3.Â
Rolling Meadows took care of Vernon Hills, 26-14. The Cougars are now 0-3 in the midst of a tough nonconference slate. Eric Boehmer had 11 tackles, a pass breakup and 5 catches for 83 yards for the Cougars. Anthony Martorano caught 5 passes for 71 yards and 2 TDs.Â
Hersey ran roughshod over Deerfield, 42-0. The Warriors own a record of 1-2.Â


Hoffman Estates shut out Maine West 44-0 a week after Maine West registered a defensive shutout. The Warriors are now 1-2. Maine West was held to 89 yards of offense per hudl.Â
Maine East fell to Wheeling 49-12. The Blue Demons have a record of 1-2. Per the Daily Herald’s Dick Quagliano, Lucia Roa had a 71-yard touchdown run for the Blue Demons in the loss.Â
Conant gouged Glenbrook North 42-3.Â
Niles North was held scoreless in a 43-0 loss to Elk Grove and is now 1-2.Â
Cross CountryÂ
Sofia Arcuri’s fifth-place time of 17:24.5 led the Maine South Hawks girls to fifth place at Lake Park’s Harvey Braus Invitational, the Hawks finished with 154 team points, trailing only some of the state’s best teams: For, Prospect, Downers Grove North and Huntley.Â
Hawks Olivia Deluca, Morgan Gioia and Caitlin Seurynck all finished among the top 50.Â
New Trier took 11th, Glenbrook North was 15th, Maine West was 20th and Niles North took 22nd.Â
Juliet Frum (7th for GBN), Ally Therivel (57th for NT), Amelie Mach (79th for Maine West) and Lindsey Klauss (131st for Niles North) led their teams, respectively.
At the same Lake Park event, Glenbrook North boys runner John Ihrke led CSL competitors with his 11th-place finish in 15:49.8.Â
GBN took 9th in the boys race, Deerfield was 15th, New Trier earned 17th and Maine West took 18th.
New Trier sophomore Ben Crane was spectacular at First to the Finish Saturday, taking 13th among 3A boys in 15:08.
Niles West’s boys took sixth as a team at the DePaul Ram Invitational Catholic Cup. Isshaq Yousfi’s 19th place finish in 17:14.5 led the Wolves.Â
At Wauconda’s invite, Glenbrook South senior Maggie Jortberg took second overall in 19:30.00 and teammate Kaitlyn Burns took fourth in 19:48.00. The Titans took third at the event.Â
GolfÂ
Vernon Hills’ Lexi Schulman might be playing the best golf of anyone in the CSL. Having recently featured Schulman in the newsletter that was featured for paid subscribers here.
The senior Cougars golfer kept up a remarkable run, shooting 71 (+1) at the Cougar Classic as her team second overall at the event to Fremd.Â
Schulman shot -1 over eight holes at Deerfield (darkness shortened event). She also shot yet another 32 over 9 holes, this time against Carmel Catholic. Schulman is the fourth CSLV Newsletter player of the week.Â
Glenbrook South’s Ashi Chikani led her team with an 83 to finish tied for sixth at the Cougar Classic.
For New Trier, Grace Leber, a freshman, shot a 37 to tie Amy Beanblossom for medalist honors in a 158-175 win over Maine South.Â
Glenbrook North’s 314 team score at the 43rd Annual Waukegan Invitational gave the Spartans a 2nd place finish, trailing only Stevenson by 11 strokes. Kacie Moon took 2nd with 73 strokes to pace GBN. Beanblossom carded a 74 to tie for 4th.Â
Tennis
New Trier emerged victorious in 5 of 6 flights to take the Deerfield Invite on Saturday. During the week, they also swept Evanston 9-0 and downed Deerfield 5-2.
Evanston also defeated Hersey 7-0.Â
Swim & DiveÂ
Evanston earned its first victory at Barrington in over a decade, defeating the host Fillies, 95-87.
Glenbrook North’s varsity swim & dive team is 3-0 to begin the season.Â
Vernon Hills shimmied away from the Conant Cougars at a Saturday meet. Jess DeLorm, Becca Tran and Sarah Gutowki led the way in the dives. In the swimming events, Izzy Ramos, Kate Williams, Vicky Burda, Margaret Zywicki, Michelle Utsis, Emma Janzen and Sandra James stood out according to coach Andrea Block. The Varsity defeated Conant 146-35.Â
Soccer
The top tier of the CSL right now appears to be Evanston (5-0-2), New Trier (6-1-2), Niles North (7-1-1 and tied New Trier 1-1 this past week), and Glenbrook North (6-2-1).Â
Volleyball
Maine East emerged victorious from Highland Park’s volleyball tournament Saturday, defeating Regina Dominican for the title.Â
Per MaxPreps, Maine South sophomore Sofia Rossi was averaging 7.7 kills per set through her first 10 sets of the season.Â
Adrianna Lee’s 82 digs in 23 sets led Maine West.
Evanston has a strong setting pair from the looks of things with Maya Valentine (77 assists) and Lina Hauser (62 assists).Â
