Second player of the week award, GBS football with big win, Vernon Hills tennis with hot start
The second CSL Varsity Newsletter Player of the Week goes to Evanston’s Dylan Groff who did a little bit of everything on Friday.

Football
Evanston’s Dylan Groff, ran for 4 TDs and threw for 2 in a 53-50 overtime win over Indian Trail (Wisconsin). He ran the ball 22 times for 142 yards. He aired the pigskin out for 192 yards on 13 of 22 passing.
Will go out on a limb here (not really) and say that Glenbrook South’s 51-21 win over Rolling Meadows was the most impressive result of the week for CSL football.
Highland Park overcame a 10-0 deficit to defeat Leyden 28-25. Nicholas Blumer had an interception return for a touchdown, a fumble recovery and a receiving touchdown.
Niles West was in control through a 24-12 road victory over Thornton.
Hersey put away New Trier 31-0.
Niles North submerged Lake View 42-0
Vernon Hills couldn’t quite keep up with Grayslake North, falling 38-26. Nolan Lazor threw for 308 yards, 2 TDs, but also 3 INTs. Ben Choi (86 rushing yards 1TD, 3 Receptions for 55 yards) and Eric Boehmer (105 receiving yards one 9 catches) were standouts.
Deerfield clipped Hinsdale South 15-12.
Maine East couldn’t keep up with Addison Trail, falling 48-6.
Elk Grove raced past Maine West 42-7.
Glenbrook North won a thrilling 16-14 road affair at Taft.
Maine South clobbered Stevenson 42-3, collecting 347 passing yards and 171 rushing yards in the win.
What are the most exciting week 2 games?
I’m going to go with Deerfield at Glenbrook North, Niles West at Niles North, New Trier at Stevenson, and a BIGTIME matchup in Warren at Maine South.
Volleyball
Vernon Hills girls volleyball moved to 4-1 after three victories at Rockford Jefferson’s invite.
Deerfield improved to 4-3 after finishing in sixth place at the Crosstown Classic.
Evanston has started the season 5-2, including wins over CSL squads Maine East, Niles North and Highland Park.
GBS is 6-0 on the season. Abby Kulia recorded 25 total digs over her first two matches.
Girls Tennis
Vernon Hills is off to quite the start, notching victories over Grayslake North (6-1), Niles West (6-2), Antioch (6-1) to start the season. Then, they hosted the Cougar Quad and defeated Carmel Catholic (3-2) Hoffman Estates (5-0) and Saint Viator (3-2)
New Trier won its home NT Invite, defeating Lake Forest 4-1 in the final. The Trevians defeated Stevenson 3-2
Cross Country
The Deerfield varsity boys bested three other squads, including city power Mather in the Warriors’ home meet Thursday, winning with 29 team points to second-place Mather’s 40.
Juniors Dane Brown (16:05.03) and Dylan Cohen (16:05.76) were the top performers on the day for Deerfield in third and fourth place, respectively.
The Warrior girls competed at home as well, besting Zion-Benton and Warren.
Freshman Natalie Arevalo’s third-place time of 20:12.73 paced the Warriors.
The Niles West boys held off Niles North in the crosstown classic in boys cross country, 27-30.
At Taft’s early bird invite sophomore Isshaq Yousfi took 10th in an eight-team field in a 2-mile race with a time of 11:13.
Nate Wehner of Highland Park took sixth overall in a time of 15:25.46 at the EIU Showdown. The Giants were fifth as a team.
Boys Soccer
Glenbrook South boys soccer has started well, and fell to Zion-Benton in the North Shore Invitational at Lake Forest 3-1 in the title game of the event.
Niles North is outscoring opponents 15-1 and has started the season 3-0.
Kevin Perez has been off to a productive start for the GBS Titans. His 3 goals and an assist lead the team as GBS is now 2-1-1.
Look out for Brady Blevins, who scored 2 goals in a 3-2 Warriors win over Elk Grove. The Warriors followed with losses to Geneva and Fenton.
The New Trier boys were led by Karsten Segall’s hat trick in a 4-1 win over Hersey on Aug. 22.
Girls Golf
New Trier played fellow power Stevenson close, falling 153-158. Alexa Green’s 36 was tops for the Trevians. The Trevians did notch a win over Deerfield on the 19th.
Boys Golf
Niles West boys golf were led by Dino Panoutsos’s career-best 36 in a win over Niles North.
New Trier is off to a good start, winning a CSL quad, the Fremd Invite and another quad. Glenbrook North was third at Fremd and Maine South took fourth.
