Maine East soccer off to strong conference start
The fifth CSL Varsity Newsletter Player of the Week is Nate Wehner of Highland Park boys cross country. Wehner’s accomplishments are listed lower on in the newsletter.
Football
New Trier got in the win column with a 35-7 stomping of Fremd. The Trevian defense recorded 4 interceptions as detailed in this story from The Record North Shore.
Glenbrook South won a thriller, 43-42 over Palatine. The Titans’ rushing attack mounted a 313-yard effort, led by Chuck Gottfried’s 121 rushing yards and 2 TDs. Hunter Kreske also threw for 3 TD passes.
Maine South nearly pulled off quite a home win, ultimately falling to power Prospect, owners of the #KnightTempo, by a score of 42-41.
The Hawks were balanced with 206 passing yards and 213 rushing yards per hudl stats. Michael Dellumo’s 172 rushing yards and a TD were big for the Hawks in a back-and-forth affair. *Note, O’Brien had Dellumo at 129 rushing yards. Not sure who is right there. Hudl stats are iffy sometimes.
Deerfield held Buffalo Grove in check and led most of the first half, but fell 23-13 to Buffalo Grove.
Hersey blew past Highland Park, which could not stop the Huskies’ offense, but did score 17 points, the most of any team against Hersey this season. Tyler Gleyzer had a 91-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Maine East was trounced by Hoffman Estates and its powerful offense, 72-7.
Conant’s vaunted ground attack rolled over Vernon Hills, mostly in the second half, defeating the Cougars 49-14.
Wheeling was able to grind out a road victory over Maine West, 20-10.
Evanston battled but didn’t have enough in the tank in a 28-14 loss to Barrington.
Glenbrook North fought, but fell to Rolling Meadows 17-14.
Niles North couldn’t hold its own in a 49-7 loss to Schaumburg.
Niles West didn’t move the ball with consistency and fell to Elk Grove 23-3.
Soccer
It looks like I’ve been proven wrong! After noting a list of the top tier of the CSL, Maine South made a statement with a 3-0 win over Glenbrook North. I had included GBN and not Maine South in that top tier last week. The Hawks are 6-3-2, but did lose to New Trier this week 3-1. They bounced back with a gut punch to GBN on Friday.
Don’t look now, but Maine East is making strides after winning just 1 of its first 7 matches. The Blue Demons defeated Maine West 4-0 and Deerfield 3-0.
A total of 5 Evanston players scored goals in a 5-1 win over Glenbrook South, those being Brian Maldonado, Johnny Hunwick, Trey Vander Verde, Diego Velasquez and CJ Henry. The Wildkits are still unbeaten through 9 games and
Every Friday — at least I attempt every Friday! — to post a photo dump post where I can share photos I’ve taken in the past of CSL performers. Sometimes I’ll get out during the week and take photos of events to share that ensuing Friday. Here’s what I got this past week in a game between Highland Park and Deerfield.
Cross Country
Nate Wehner won two races during the week, taking a victory at a CSL quad between Vernon Hills, Maine East and Niles North at Harms Woods. More impressively, he bested the rest of the field at the Libertyville Invite at Adler Park by over 34 seconds in 16:14.00. For that, he is the fifth CSL Varsity Newsletter Player of The Week, the first cross country runner to win the award, as well as the first from Highland Park.
Bella Oviedo, a freshman runner fo the HP girls XC team, took 19th at the Libertyville race.
Regional assignments are out for Cross Country. Of the 11 assigned teams to the 3A Wheeling Regional at Heritage Park, 8 are from the CSL. Those who advance from that Saturday, Oct. 22 race will compete in the Hoffman Estates Sectional at Busse Woods on Oct. 29.
Maine South won the Minooka Invite with Joseph Karlesky’s 4th-place finish in 15:45 leading the way forthe Hawks.
Glenbrook North’s John Ihrke (4th, 15:57.60) and Evanston’s Samuel Froum (5th, 16:10.90) were the top CSL finishers At Warren’s Bill Dawson Invite.
Also in the top 10 for Evanston were Torin Ravi (7th), and Henry O’Malley (9th).
Evanston took 2nd as a team with 69 points, behind only Fremd with 64. GBN was 3rd and GBS was 6th.
GBS’ Maggie Jortberg’s 6th-place finish on the girls side led CSL runners at the Warren race. Stella Davis was Evanston’s top finisher in 10th. GBS took 6th and Evanston was 7th.
Golf
As Dion Martorano detailed, Maine West’s Mike Godlewski reached an impressive mark, reaching 250 career wins.
Charlie Parcell continues to play well for the Warriors.
New Trier’s Logan Keeter shot a 31 in a Trevians win over Niles West on the 13th.
Volleyball
GBS has won 31 of 36 sets and sits at 15-1 this season. Northwestern commit Ava Pratt has 133 kills and is a remarkable 133 of 136 in serve success. Abby Kuliga is up to 121 digs. The combo of Julia Frankewitz and Rachel Eshoo have combined for 265 assists.
Swim & Dive
Tennis
Evanston won a thrilling match over Maine South, 4-3.
Senior Spotlight
I’m going to start ramping up a new feature of the newsletter, spotlighting some seniors from area programs. I will probably use Twitter polls or the newsletter to ask fans what sports and schools should be featured. I did that this past week on Twitter, with volleyball and soccer each winning a different poll. So I’ve already interviewed a Glenbrook South soccer player for one of these spotlights. Look for that feature this week.
Grad Catchups
Who are some examples of CSL grads contributing to their collegiate programs currently?
How about Deerfield Class of 2019 graduate Ryan Grady at Middlebury College of Vermont? A multi-time All-American and D3Soccer.com National Goalkeeper of the Year a season ago, Grady is leading the NCAA Division III 9th-ranked Panthers in the net once more and has allowed 4 goals and owns a shutout through 4 games.
That team roster also features New Trier grads Daniel Kaye and Hank Nelson and Niles North grad Alem Hadzic. Kaye has played in 81 minutes over 3 games.
Another you say?
Maine South Class of 2022 grad Molly Pistorius scored 2 goals for Northern Michigan in a win over Saginaw Valley Saturday. She has 4 goals and 4 assists over her first 8 college games as her squad is unbeaten.
I will try to start highlighting more CSL grads, but will rely on submissions and a lot of reminders about said athletes!
