The CSL Varsity Newsletter: Whitney First Player Of The Week
More golf, tennis, cross country notes and football game week is here.
Golf
Deerfield’s Hunter Whitney is off to a hot start, carding a winning -1 71 at Woodstock’s invite and a +1 73 (2nd place) at the Warren Invitational.
I’m awarding Whitney the first CSL Varsity Player Of The Week honors.
New Trier’s boys golf team won the CSL Showcase with a team score of 311, led by Oliver Barr’s 73. The Trevians also won a dual vs. Lake Forest, 144-156, with Millan Biggs’ 35 leading the way. Veron Hills shot a 322 at the event. Other results were unavailable.
Shout out to Vernon Hills girls golf’s Lexi Schulman on some program history.
Soccer
Chicagoland Soccer, which I have contributed to, does a really great job of providing in-depth looks at soccer all across the Chicagland soccer landscape and beyond.
Per their database, Evanston has 5 of the commited collegiate girls soccer players in the CSL as of the writing of this post. Vernon Hills and New Trier each have 3 of the combined 9 commits on the boys side.
I went looking for a little bit of trivia. Did you know that a Glenbrook North Spartan holds the state record for goals in a match? Konrad Klosowiak scored 11 goals in a 2009 match. The NFHS has that as tied for the fifth most in a high school game ever.
Cross Country
Milesplit Illinois put out its preseason rankings and featured two CSL teams in its top 15. Maine South and New Trier are both up there.
Volleyball
I’ll be on the lookout this season for what Ava Pratt and the Glenbrook South Titans are able to accomplish. Here’s a line from the preview that coach Kelly Dorn provided.
Ava Pratt has played in the USA volleyball pipeline and recently committed to play Big 10 Volleyball at Northwestern University.
I covered Pratt and the Titans once before, for Journal & Topics Media, when the Titans won a regional title vs. Glenbrook North.
Found a photo of Pratt from that night too.
Football
It’s game week across the state of Illinois and each CSL team has a game scheduled for Week 1. While a Highland Park Giant myself, I’ve got my eye on a few contests in particular. I’m most interested in Rolling Meadows at Glenbrook South, Hersey at New Trier and Niles West at Thornton. I would bet the matchup between the Mustangs and Titans would be the best.
The IHSA updated a list of the winningest varsity football programs in state history. Evanston is highest on the list at 20th with 653 victories.
In case you missed it, Deerfield graduate Charlie Jones transferred from Iowa to Purdue this offseason. It sure looks like Purdue folks are high on their new receiver/special teams extraordinaire.
Basketball
Fresh off a trip to Israel for the Maccabi games, Niles North graduate Yogi Oliff is settling in at Washington University (St. Louis). As a Coach Carter myself, thought it was funny that his favorite movie was the Samuel L. Jackson classic.

Enjoying the persistent positive energy from the Niles West tennis account. Niles North also got off to a good start, defeating Palatine.
